31 Mar Yemaya wins National Award for Excellence in Tourism, Innovation in Tourism
Yemaya Island Hideaway & Spa located in the South Caribbean Autonomous Region of Nicaragua won the XI Edición de Premio Nacional Güegüense a la Excelencia Turística for Innovación Turística (National Awards for Excellence in Tourism, Innovation in Tourism), constituted by CANATUR (Cámara Nacional de Turismo de Nicaragua), the country’s principal and umbrella tourist authority. The awards were given away at an impressive ceremony in Managua on the 2nd of March 2017.
Yemaya Island Hideaway & Spa was among the top finalists nationwide for three different categories in the Premio Nacional Güegüense a la Excelencia Turística

- Environmental Sustainability
- Social Responsibility and Sustainability
The award citation read that Yemaya were the winners for:
“A luxury hospitality project in an undeveloped destination, with an emphasis on sustainable management
adjusted to its business focus, for generating jobs and sustainable tourism products, providing innovative inputs and services in Little Corn Island and for its contribution to Nicaragua’s sustainable tourism development.”
The inspection committee was shown around the resort gardens, the use of the herbs, fruits and flowers in the kitchen, the STP, segregation and re-use of garbage, using driftwood to make furniture, employment of local staff and so on, apart from future plans for solar power, rainwater harvesting and leach pit. The presentation to the jury was described as the ‘cherry on the cake’ at the end of 2 days of deliberations.
In his speech, Ashvin Kumar, General Manager, thanked the resort team, the owners and his predecessors for all their efforts and accepted the award on their behalf, before being interviewed on television.
